How does Happy Numbers teach?

A coherent PK-5 math story that helps teachers differentiate instruction and deepen students’ conceptual understanding of math

Upon entering their account, students start exploring the universe of math with Dino. To do so, each student builds a rocket by taking an adaptive placement test. Provided by MetaMetrics company (Lexile framework for reading and Quantile Framework for Mathematics), this test consists of 20 questions that determine a student’s level to create an individual learning pathway. Once students build their rocket, they start exploring math planets and hatching dinosaur eggs! What’s inside each egg? To find out, students have to reach the weekly target you set. Reaching this target every week during the school year will result in at least 1 grade level of growth. (read more about student account)

# Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract model

Each student’s individual learning pathway involves different types of exercises that use the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract model of education.

# Each exercise at the right time

Starting from the entry point determined by the placement test, each student works in the zone of proximal development all the time. Our scoring system ensures students spend just the right amount of time on any exercise. Within each one, students complete several tasks with increasing levels of difficulty. If they solve a task correctly, one bead moves from left to right on a score counter. If the answer is incorrect, one bead moves back. Students have to move all the beads to the right to advance to the next exercise. This way, each next step will be provided at the right time, every time.

# Immediate feedback

In the case of a mistake, students continue working independently thanks to immediate feedback represented by friendly tips and colored hints. Sometimes it can be just a simple hint.

If the concept is new or complex, students will repeat it step-by-step with Dino for a more thorough review.

# Student autonomy

We also want students of any level to build confidence through autonomy, so sometimes students can choose their approach: give the answer or solve with Dino step by step. Students who can give the correct answer without any help receive a little surprise at the end -- inspiring, isn’t it?

# Conceptual understanding and fluency practice

The Happy Numbers composition of exercises is 80% conceptual/procedural and 20% fluency. The fluency exercises build automaticity and strengthen students’ math foundation. These types of tasks look more game-like, but they reinforce essential skills.
