Using the Skills Report to Plan Targeted Interventions

The Skills Report shows each student’s current progress on specific math skills and highlights students who may need additional support. The more time students spend working in Happy Numbers, the more accurate the report becomes.

Each skill is assessed based on the student’s accuracy over their last 20 attempts at that skill. There are four possible levels:

• Mastered (green) — 80% accuracy or higher. The student has mastered the skill or is well on the way.
• Developing (yellow) — 60% accuracy or higher. The student is making progress but has not yet reached mastery.
• Help Needed (red) — the level to watch. It signals that the student needs additional intervention on that skill.
• TBD (gray) — Happy Numbers doesn’t have enough information yet. The report updates as soon as the student solves enough related tasks.

The Need Help filter narrows the list to students who need your attention.

If a particular student has a red skill

When you see a red skill for a particular student, follow these steps.

1. Check the skill status

A silhouette icon (In Progress) next to a cell marks a skill the student is still actively working on. A yellow — or even red — level here is not necessarily cause for alarm: sometimes the student is still working through the tasks and simply needs more time.

2. Check for missing prerequisites

A red skill is often caused by an earlier gap. Click the row with the student’s name to open the details, then click Summary. If you see yellow or red squares in earlier skills, focus on those first.

3. Open the student's detailed report

In the same student’s detailed report, you can filter by domain to see only the Help Needed and Developing skills.

For each skill, you’ll see the average accuracy and the list of tasks the student has solved, sorted from most recent to earliest. Task names are clickable, so you can open the exact exercise where the student struggled. Hover over the time spent on a task to see how it compares with our estimate for that exercise.

4. Assign targeted practice on the unmastered skills

Once you’ve identified the gaps, you have two tools to close them:

• Assign a reteach with our Assignments tool. The domains and skills are the same as in the report, so just find the student and add the details. We recommend a 10-minute practice that includes both Guided Practice and Practice tasks: Guided Practice walks the student through the concept step by step, and Practice consolidates it with quicker tasks.
• Print a worksheet from our Printables Library. Type the skill name in the search bar, then choose the difficulty level and the language.

If a group of students is struggling with the same skill

Sometimes a whole group of students struggles with the same skill. That’s a signal to run a small-group intervention or adjust your classroom activities.

1. Sort by skill to see who is struggling with what

Click any skill in the header row to sort students by that skill. This is especially useful when forming small groups — you can see at a glance who has mastered the skill and who is struggling, and group students accordingly.

2. Re-teach the concept in class

If a red or yellow skill shows up for several students, plan a mini-lesson or small-group session to re-teach the concept directly. Use our Printables Library to make practice more focused and differentiated.

3. Double-check that the gap is closed

After the re-teach, follow up in Happy Numbers by assigning a Practice task with the Assignment tool. We recommend a short 5-minute assignment as a formative check to confirm that students got the concept.
