Assessment and adaptation are critical components of Happy Numbers’ instructional approach. We continually monitor students as they interact with each problem to determine the zone of proximal development (ZPD). We then adapt the delivery of content to maintain the ZPD for each student.

Students are given exercises (and any necessary support) until they demonstrate mastery of a concept or skill. Only when they have demonstrated mastery do they advance to the next lesson. Each consecutive lesson builds upon the previous one, carefully scaffolding student learning.

How does Happy Numbers teach?

For formal assessment at the beginning of the school year, we are partnering with Meta Metrics to integrate a Quantile scale. This baseline data helps us assess students’ prior knowledge and optimize content delivery.

Teachers can always further customize this progression by assigning specific lessons to individuals or to needs-based groups.
